SCA[]
The Society for Creative Anachronism(SCA) is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 20 kingdoms in countries around the world. Participants, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, art exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. The SCA's focus is on history, not fantasy. It was founded back in the 1960s in California.
SCA combat falls under two types, heavy weapons, also known as Chivalric combat, which involve rattan weapons without padding, requiring the user to wear extensive protective armor... and light weapons, also known as rapier combat, which are fencing style weapons such as foils, epees, rapiers and use standard fencing protective gear.
Apart from combat, the SCA is known for extreme detail and research into the history of the middle ages, often going to great length to detail what is Period and what is not. For example, in HFS much of what is acceptable garb would not be appropriate for the SCA, because it is not clothing that was actually used (or could have been used) in the middle ages. However, the SCA's founding documents only require attempts at pre 17th-century clothing and many groups are willing to loan clothing to newcomers. They are a good resource for costuming tips and methods.
